Berthing, mooring and shoreside support, Waisai to Misool

There is one physical marina in these islands — at Waisai, for small to mid vessels. Everything else is sand patches, conservation buoys and jetty windows, held together by coordination. This board shows which is which, and the desk arranges the rest, quoted in USD.

Anchoring in Raja Ampat is a per-night decision made on the water, not a list ticked off in advance.

Compiled from crews recently on-site and verified per leg by the desk. Depth bands are what crews report at the usable patches — your echo sounder and your eyes on the sand remain the authority on the day.

The honest picture first

What actually exists in Raja Ampat

One physical marina, in Waisai

Meridian Adventure Marina at Waisai serves small to mid vessels. Alongside space at the town jetties is limited and prioritised for scheduled and government traffic — visiting yachts take brief windows for crew and stores, then move on.

Berthing & jetty windows →

Buoys are conservation infrastructure

Raja Ampat's moorings are funded by park environmental fees to keep ground tackle off living reef — not harbour infrastructure. No master list stays accurate for a season; rating and condition are checked buoy by buoy.

Mooring coordination →

Heavy logistics stage from Sorong

Diesel in quantity, serious provisioning, clearance offices and the DEO airport all sit in Sorong on the mainland. Waisai is the forward base — crew, stock top-ups, administration — a two-hour fast ferry away.

Vessel-side services

Six lanes the desk runs on the water

01

Moorings & anchorages

Route checked stop by stop: buoy status verified with operators on-site, anchor-only calls flagged, ranger or village liaison arranged.

We do not own the seabed — and no one else does either.

02

Berthing & mooring booking

Jetty windows at Waisai, third-party berths including Meridian Adventure Marina, line handling reserved ahead in writing.

Alongside space is scarce; nobody can promise a berth that is not there.

03

Agency & clearance

Sorong port clearance — Quarantine, Immigration, Customs, Harbourmaster — plus marine-park and regency entry cards, sequenced before you arrive.

The paper CAIT is history; the offices and the cards are not.

04

Provisioning & bunkering

Sorong supplies, Waisai tops up: diesel quality checked, cold chain held, galley orders staged to your jetty window or tender.

Small-quantity fuel only inside the islands — plan bunkering from Sorong.

05

Fresh water & waste

Potable water sources verified, tank hygiene protocols, segregated waste landed through proper disposal at Waisai or Sorong.

Villages cannot absorb yacht waste; nothing goes over the side in the park.

06

Tender, turnaround & crew

Embarkation days run on one clock: jetty windows, deliveries, guest rotations, DEO airport transfers with immigration liaison.

Ferries keep their own schedule — 09:00 and 14:00, weather permitting.

Also on the board: superyacht support for 30 m+ hulls · seasons & passage windows · the USD cost guide.

Field data

Before you trust a single buoy

Four checks the desk runs — or you run — before a hull lies to a mooring overnight.

CheckWhat it means here
RatingWhat tonnage was this buoy installed for, and who maintains it? If no one can answer, treat it as unrated.
ConditionDive or snorkel the riser and fixing: look for chafe, corrosion, and what the substrate is actually doing under load.
OwnershipResort, dive operator or park programme — private buoys are not public property, and dive boats hold working priority at dive-site buoys.
ExposureJudge the site by what it does at 03:00 in a squall, not by how it looks at noon. Rig your own bridle to the eye, never lie to the pick-up line.

The riser tells the truth the surface float hides — check the fixing, not the paint.

Two regimes, no closed season

Which side of an island you sleep on

Near the equator, outside the cyclone belt: planning weather here is swell direction and squall timing, not survival weather.

DEC – MAR

NW monsoon

NW wind and swell load north- and west-facing stops. Favour the Gam bays, southern and eastern lees; exposed northern day-stops need timing.

APR – MAY

Transition

Light, variable, frequently glassy mornings — the forgiving window for open legs, photography charters and the Wayag run.

JUN – SEP

SE season

Steady SE flow: Misool's south coast loads, Dampier's northern pockets shine. Liveaboard high season with predictable shelter logic.

OCT – NOV

Transition

Winds ease and back; superb all-around cruising and the classic crossing window to and from the region.

A squall line at anchor is a gear-and-vigilance event, not a crisis — if the anchorage was chosen for the season. Month-by-month regime and passage windows →

Operational geography

Sorong is the depot. Waisai is the hinge.

  1. Sorong

Port of entry: clearance offices, diesel bunkering, market provisioning, DEO airport. The Sorong shore gateway handles the mainland side.

    Everything heavy starts here.

  2. Waisai

Regency capital on Waigeo: small harbour and jetties, the marina facility, park card office, fresh-produce top-ups.

Forward base — not a berth for the season.

  3. Dampier Strait

Gam, Kri, Mansuar, Arborek — the compact, relatively sheltered cruising box with the famous sites.

Current is the defining force; rig for stream.

  4. Piaynemo & Wayag

Viewpoint lagoons and the northern karst — expedition legs rather than casual hops, with ranger liaison at Wayag.

    Timing territory in any season.

  5. Misool

The southern quarter: karst, marquee dive sites, village-scale supply only.

Plan range and the turn-back point before you go.

Dawn at Waisai harbour jetty on Waigeo, Raja Ampat, with a phinisi schooner and crew loading provisions

Waisai at dawn is what "marina destination" really means here: a working jetty, a ferry timetable, crates moving by tender. The desk's job is making that rhythm serve your itinerary — the complete yacht support guide maps every service line.

Quick answers

Asked before every passage

Is there a marina in Raja Ampat?

There is no full-service superyacht marina in Raja Ampat. The regency has a harbour and jetty complex at Waisai on Waigeo used by ferries, patrol craft, local vessels and — case by case — visiting yachts, plus a network of conservation mooring buoys and a very large number of anchorages. Heavy logistics are normally staged from Sorong on the mainland.

Where do visiting yachts berth in Raja Ampat?

Most visiting yachts do not berth alongside at all. They use conservation moorings and anchorages for the working itinerary and call at Waisai only briefly for crew movements, stores and administration. Alongside space at Waisai is limited, prioritised for scheduled and government traffic, and needs to be arranged in advance.

How far is Raja Ampat from Sorong?

Waisai, the regency capital on Waigeo, is roughly a two-hour fast-ferry crossing from Sorong on the Papuan mainland. Sorong holds the airport, commercial port, fuel infrastructure and agents, which is why it functions as the depot for yacht logistics in the region.

Do yachts need a permit to cruise Raja Ampat?

Visitors to the Raja Ampat marine protected areas pay an entry contribution administered by the regional conservation authority, in addition to the normal Indonesian cruising, customs and immigration requirements that apply to any foreign-flagged vessel. Confirm current rates and procedure before arrival, as they are revised periodically.
